Olympic Games 2016

Over the next few weeks, the largest sports event in the world is happening - the Olympic Games, which this year is held in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. Over the 16 days that the event takes place, more than 11,000 participants from 206 different countries, will be competing in 42 different sporting disciplines.

The Olympic Games is one of the most widely followed sports events worldwide, easily surpassing its competitors such as FIFA World Cup or the NFL Super Bowl. Because of the very broad appeal and the consistency of the event, many of the postal authorities of the world produce special stamp issues for the Olympic Games. The games were introduced by the Ancient Greeks, and have been held regularly every 4 years since 1896, but have been disrupted twice, by the two World Wars. That means that the modern version of the Olympic Games have been held 28 times so far, counting the present games in Rio, Brazil.

On the 27th of June 2016, Brazil issued a set of 16 stamps in celebration of the 2016 Olympic Games, which is pictured here. You can also find it in our catalogue.

Because of the scale of the Olympic games, many postal authorities produce commemorative stamps for every Olympic Game. If you want to explore the wide range of stamps related to the Olympic games, you can see them in our catalogue here, and here.
